• “Bhashantara”- The Symposium for Indian Languages Technology Industry
18th November 2019 at FICCI, New Delhi

It is estimated India's internet users expected to register double digit growth to reach 627 million in 2019, driven by rapid internet growth in rural areas. With growing penetration of cheaper smartphones and data prices, Internet usage in the country has exceeded half a billion people for first time, pegged at 566 million, driven by rural internet growth and usage.

But 90% of these users are non-English speaking and are also first-time internet users. This user base currently accounts for 66% share in overall online content consumption surpassing English language. By 2021 these first-time non-English speaking users will account for 75% of India’s internet user base. This poses an enormous potential for the digital sector to upgrade their services and solve the unique “Bharat problem” through technological entrepreneurship.

Carrying forward the same momentum and with industry’s positive response, we are happy to join hands with Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), MyGov and TDIL in organising the Bhashanatra- A Symposium for Language Technology Industry, on 18th November 2019 at Federation House, New Delhi. Bhahsantara is the annual symposium for the Indic Language Technology Industry to discuss and engage on matters of language localization technologies, digital Indic content development and overall development of the ecosystem.

The objective of the Bhashantara symposium is to understand and develop an effective mechanism towards the development and usage of Indic language technologies. And how the language computing technologies are helping in the overall growth of India’s digital economy. There would be several panel sessions, keynote addresses and case-study presentations for the industry to engage and discuss about the various issues and challenges faced in the industry and deliberate on how to bring the next billion users online. The symposium will also witness exhibition by various organizations in the Indic language technologies area to showcase their indigenous products and services.

We are also happy to inform you that, with the spirit for the development and expansion of the Indic Internet and Language Technology industry of India, and to add as much as possible Indic words in the corpora, FICCI is also running, “BhashaAnuvad- A technology-based translation competition”,
