FICCI-ILIA in association with TDIL, MeitY and Indian Cellular Association (ICA) organized a full day symposium for Indian Languages Technology Industry on July 30, 2018 at Federation House, New Delhi.
The aim of the conference was to bring together all the industry significant stakeholders from Government, technology companies, online media, regional publishers, academia, telecom companies etc. to interact, deliberate, and ideate on possible solutions to address roadblocks faced by the Indian languages industry towards technology and business developments. The symposium which was attended by more than 200 industry stakeholders, had Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Shri. Ajay Prakash Sawhney as the key note speaker. In the symposium he reiterated the importance of ‘India Language Stack’ in overcoming linguistic and communication barriers in the digital space.
The Secretary also launched e-Aksharayan in 7 Indian languages, a desktop software for converting scanned printed Indian Language documents into a fully editable text format in Unicode encoding. Mobile Testing Data in all 22 Indian languages useful in testing the display as well as inputting in mobile handsets IS standard 16333 (Part 3) was also released at the symposium. It defines the requirements for mobile handset for inputting of text in English, Hindi and at least one additional Indian official language along with facility of message readability in the phones for all 22 Indian official languages.
Additionally, there were panel discussions on issues related to mobile handset support to regional languages, adoption of standards, challenges faced by the Indian Language Technology industry and content publishers and emerging technologies that will have a bearing on the growth of the language technology and translation industry.
